April 26th will mark the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. OVACC has launced a special project to help commemorate the disaster that is still affecting so many.
We are undertaking to collect donations in denominations of 25 (25 cents from school children and $25 from adults) to help us initiate and fund two self sustaining projects in a small village in Belarus. In the town of Machnovitchi there is an urgent need of funds for the school in the area of building materials (windows, doors, sinks etc) in addition to books and other academic tools.
Secondly, we hope to assist Belarusian familites in obtaining pigs, and provide support in the raising of pigs, to provide a lasting source of nutrition for the identified community.
Over the years, we have brought Belarusian children to the Ottawa Valley for 5-10 week respite visits. These travelers reside in regions of Belarus still contaminated with lo-level radiation. Long term observations by nurses, doctors, teachers and parents indicate that the children experience disappearance of headaches, dizziness, irritability, tearfulness, improvement of sleep and desire to participate in sports after their recuperation in radiation-free zones, such as Canada.
Ottawa Valley Aid for Chernobyl Children (O.V.A.C.C) is a no-profit organziation founded to provide humanitarian assistance to victims of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear explosion. |
